Natural Deodorant for All: Recipe & Giveaway - CLOSED

You guys probably already know that I have a **tHiNg*~** for natural beauty products. Chemicals are no bueno, and we do not want to be putting those things onto (and ultimately into) our precious bodies. Even if you can't get yourself to fully hop onto the natural beauty thing just yet, pleeease promise me this one thing: that you'll switch to natural deodorant.

I can’t act like I can give you the exact science behind why antiperspirants are bad – just hearing it come from Lilavati is enough for me. That woman is all-knowing. And, just think about it logically – your body is supposed to sweat. It’s a natural thing. If we physically restrain our glands from doing their job, I’d imagine we’re keeping toxins locked in our bodies instead of allowing them to be released through our skin.

Now, I’ve made a ton of beauty products in the past few years. Hair masks, facial cleansers, body scrubs, face mists, toothpaste, mouthwash… the list goes on. And I have to admit: I’ve never been able to make something that worked better than something I’ve bought elsewhere. Except for this deodorant.

I made my first version of this back in May, and I have used it every single day since. That’s 5 months. It WORKS. I seriously stand behind it, and I just want everyone in the world to use it! That’s why I decided to do this here giveaway.

Here’s the recipe:

¾ cups organic unrefined virgin coconut oil (room temperature works best)
1 cup mixture of natural baking soda & organic arrowroot flour
15-20 drops organic essential oil

To make, scoop coconut oil into a bowl, then add your mixture of baking soda and arrowroot flour – use ½ a cup of each for regular skin, or ¼ cup baking soda and ¾ cup arrowroot flour for sensitive skin, then mix well. (The baking soda can be irritating to some, so my advice is to use less of it to begin with, and figure out what works best for you.) The mixture should be well-combined, without any excess dry ingredients. If it’s too dry, add a bit more coconut oil. Then, add your essential oils – about 15 drops for sensitive skin, 20 for regular. The version I’m giving away uses bergamot oil, which is a gorgeously intoxicating scent – but you can use whatever you like!

Bergamot oil can become harmful if exposed to sunlight, so be sure to store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.

If your skin isn’t used to using a natural deodorant, it may take a few weeks for your body to become accustomed to this. Please don’t give up on it. Use it a few times a day if you need. You’ll likely begin to sweat less and less – and, who knows? One day you may not even need deodorant at all!

**A huge thank you to everyone who suggested their recipes here. I gathered info from all of your recipes in order to land on this final recipe!**

NOW FOR THE GIVEAWAY.

I'm gifting a 2-ounce tin to 10 of you beautiful people. I don’t care if you live next door to me, or all the way around the world – this giveaway is open to EVERYONE. The winners will be chosen randomly, but you better believe I’ll be reading every single comment. :)

  17. For me, it is not about seeing beauty sometimes but seeing it always. I see beauty in the changing of the seasons-in the rustling leaves in the wind, the acorns on the ground, the pumpkins on my windowsill. I love autumn, and everything that goes with it. 21. Woke up late today and was super irritated with the NYC commute hustle. I kid you not, when getting off the subway I watch this young, attractive boss thug of a man take an elderly blind mans arm and help him up the stairs with no comment- just a pure act of kindness. I immediately start crying in front of Trader Joes because it was too perfect and beautiful and I have no emotional self control. So happy to share this one!

  23. Ahh! I love your blog and through you, I love experimenting with making my own products too! I have to try this because I've been on a hunt for natural deodorant and toothpaste for quite some time.. I don't take you have a recipe for toothpaste too, do you?

But, today felt like the first day of autumn for me. (I live in Southern California).. I woke up, biked to the farmer's market with my best friend and just hung out for little. The wind is blowing just enough to give you little goosebumps and making you feel less dumb for wearing boots, harem pants and a light knitted sweater when its only 75 degrees, the smell of all the different kinds of food is so intoxicating (found a local juice vendor and tried his pineapple, ginger, mint and kale juice, srsly so good!) , there's also a man playing some 70s funk music some folks are dancing and everyone was just so warm and nice. It was just a damn good time!

Hope you have a rockin day, hummusbird!

Creative growth is an organization out in California that supports art education and creation to individuals with mental, physical, and developmental disabilities. Totally made my day! It's so nice to work for a company that supports such wonderful programs and creativity :)

    Have a beautiful day!

  38. I woke before the sun this morning, not a regular occurrence so my dog, Cassie & I jumped into the car & headed to the local forest. We walked until we reached the highest summit in the forest & we sat together among the golden leaves & watched the pink sunrise & listened to the wild birds morning song. I've never felt so connected to the earth & Cassies tail wagged the whole time. This is going to be our weekend ritual come rain or shine, my soul is so much calmer today 😊

  58. Brigette! You are such an inspiration, girl. Here in Harrisburg I am beginning to feel winter creep into weekend afternoons. Today, I woke up early for a sunrise run. There is nothing better than a cold fall morning run. My fingers were numb but my heart was so happy to see all the wonderful colors in the sky rise up over the Susquehanna River. Nothing but good vibes all day when you start your morning like that. It makes you feel at ease, all problems drift away, and you can truly enjoy the weekend hours.

  59. I made mine a few months back from your recipe on FP and I love it! Sadly, I moved to a town where there are no organic food stores (limited arrow root flower and/or coconut oil) and I'm a broke student. So I'm all out and had to buy drugstore brand :( So as for my beautiful thing I saw today... It SNOWED! I'm Canadian, yet I'm still not a fan of the wet white fluff that has landed outside my bedroom window, but I've tried to turn my view to the other side. It's beautiful; the seasons are changing, winter and warm clothes and hot chocolate and Christmas are coming! So I'm going to take it as a sign that life is going to be a little brighter as the snow will be shining every day. xoxo Averry (averrymartin21@gmail.com)
