playing with flowers



Part of what I do at work requires me to use the graphics you see all over the Free People website -- like the pretty little flowers and gorgeous doodles that are on the homepage right now. I get to stare in awe at the raw Photoshop files and wonder how all of those layers have come together to make whatever brilliant masterpiece I'm looking at. Every day I am absolutely blown away by the work done by our graphic design team. I have no idea how they do it, but I'm so incredibly inspired by it.

This little thing you see above was totally inspired by this month's Free People graphics. A few weeks ago I pressed some flowers for this DIY, and now I have a bunch of them just sitting at my desk -- so I scanned them, put them in Photoshop, played around for a little, and came up with whatever it is you're looking at up there. 

The photo is of my little Ollie smelling some flowers on my kitchen table. I don't think I've ever really done a mixed media piece before (does this even count as mixed media?), but it was so much fun. I love creating things that don't necessarily make sense or have a purpose. And it's rare that I have a chance to do it -- actually, it's rare that I MAKE a chance for myself to do it. I want to start devoting more time to being creative, instead of only doing so whenever I have a spare moment. Just as time must be allotted for eating food and doing laundry, time must be allotted for creativity. After all, it's one of my biggest values in life. You might even say I live for it.

to new hope we go



A couple of weekends ago, some of my Philly gurlz and I took a little Day Trip out to New Hope, PA.

HAHA. I'm laughing so much right now. I have no idea why I just capitalized "day trip" right there. I was about to correct it, but that was way to funny not to share. Something about capitalized words that shouldn't be capitalized just gets me every freaking time. Evvvery freaking time.

When I got into the car full of girls, one of the first things I said was, "So like, what even is New Hope?"

I had never heard of it until a few days prior, but I was down to go, and I'm so happy I did. It's a quaint little town just a short drive from Philly filled with little vintage stores and hippie shops galore. I think we all ended up with a little treasure of some sort. I acquired an amazingly flowy (and so0o "Brigette") top from an awesome Indian shop, and some gorgeous-smelling jasmine perfume that came solid in a really cool ceramic pot. I also bought and immediately lost a cute vintage bracelet. And then I lost my lens cap... but these little hiccups only added more memories to the adventure of a day we had.

I'm still laughing at that "day trip" thing right now.

We had brunch at the most adorable little restaurant -- like, plants and twinkle lights hanging from the ceiling, stone floors, huge windows... even peacock chairs.

I had such a good time with that little crew. And we'll definitely be back -- I mean, I have to find my lens cap anyway.

the final celebration

T'was a night full of smiling faces and way too many photo booth pictures. My friend Jon created the most magical photo booth backdrop I have ever encountered, and my friend Aly constructed a birthday cake that was almost an exact replica of my kitten, minus the stripes. Funfetti, of course. I might not have had a New Year's kiss, but I had plenty of New Year's hugs -- even better.

On New Year's Day, I hit my quarter-century mark. Yes, kids. This girl turned 25 years old. Since this is the first time I've lived this far from my family, it was a bit of a different birthday this year. Instead of spending the whole day hanging out with them, it was just a few hours and then I was off to Philly, but it was a great birthday nonetheless. All the important parts were there: my wonderful family (+ a few additions who fall into the same category), Little Vincent's pizza, and a Funfetti cake in the shape of a clown. An excellent ending to my first quarter-century and the perfect start to my second.
